For You I Will
By Trang (Jan) Hua, COMP student
For you I will rise before the sun and
open my eyes wide though they would rather stay shut tight.
For you I will drive the distance, amidst my resistance to
lose my patience as strangers cut me off in traffic.
For you I will keep focused
Blocking out the distractions from my own life, so that I do not make a mistake during your operation.
For you I will bear the brunt of getting yelled at by my attending;
I will admit my faults and learn from them, not get defensive.
For you.
For you I will repeatedly wash my hands thoroughly, even if it means that they will be dry, cracked, and
itchy by the end of the day.
For you I will work through the back pain and sore feet.
I will continue to do my best to focus on your needs and not on my own.
For you I will put up with the long nights of studying, so that I will not make a mistake in your
diagnosis or the management of your care in the future.
For you I will look up things I do not know and be humble enough to admit that I have
much to learn.
For you I will tell the truth even if it may cost me a lot in return.
For you I will spend hundreds of thousands of dollars, so that I may one day earn the privilege
of being called your doctor.
For you I will try my best, I will forego rest, I will take countless, countless tests.
For you I will do these things.
Because if you were my mother, my father, my brother, my friend, I would want someone else to do
those same things for you.
