Message from the Dean Our Mission: Educating future

pharmacy professionals to serve

the health care needs of society

for the College of Pharmacy. We get a rare glimpse at the planning and improve the quality of
that went into the formation of the College and the people who

when there was great demand for pharmacists. Many chain pharmacy
executives were advocates for the traditional BS Pharmacy degree over the
longer Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) curriculum, suggesting that California
PharmD programs were over training pharmacists. Of course, the tide of
change, which started in California, would sweep the nation so that by 2000
the PharmD was the sole entry-level pharmacy degree in the US. Today, with
all of the changes in pharmacy practice and the amazing opportunities that
await our 2016 graduates, we are continually refining our curriculum to
ensure it provides an innovative educational experience that produces
competent practice- and team-ready health professionals. We sincerely thank
those educational visionaries who contributed so much to the founding of our
College.

We are also fortunate to have two of our founding faculty who are also
celebrating their 20th anniversary at WesternU; Dr. Sunil Prabhu, Executive
Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs and Dr. Sam Shimomura,
Associate Dean for College Advancement. Special thanks to Dr. Sam for our
first faculty-sponsored endowed scholarship. The College is delighted to have
received our first endowed alumni scholarship from cousins Sumit Desai, For the last 20 years,
PharmD ’02 and Bhavesh Desai, PharmD ’02. We are grateful for their support WesternU College of Pharmacy students
and their lasting investment in the success of our students. We also celebrate have had consistent outstanding
three outstanding alumni who are members of the WesternU faculty; Megan performance on board exams:
Nguyen, PharmD ’00, Donald Hsu, PharmD ’03, and Dr. Micah Hata,
PharmD ’07 who just received the 2016 CPhA Distinguished New Practitioner NAPLEX pass rate:
Award. They all contribute daily to the success of our program. 2015: 96.69% National (93.86%)
I sincerely hope that you will be able to join our 20th Anniversary Celebration 2014: 98.26%
Dinner on September 17th here on campus. I know you will want to see your 2013: 99.21%
classmates, faculty and professional staff who were such an important part of 2012: 97.48%
your WesternU experience. Be sure to look for communication from our 20th 2011: 99.20%
