Message from the President

Hello everybody:

I’m pleased to introduce you to the latest edition of WesternU View,
which several times each year takes a kind of snapshot of life at
Western University of Health Sciences, and shares it with students,
faculty, staff, alumni and the general public.

This Summer 2014 edition puts special focus on some of the work
being done at one of WesternU’s most recent major accomplishments:
the COMP-Northwest campus in Lebanon, Oregon. This campus of the
College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific has been educating new
generations of rural health care providers as its main objective, but its
secondary benefits are having a major impact on the people of the mid-Willamette Valley and the
state of Oregon.

Among these benefits are three programs that demonstrate COMP-Northwest’s commitment to
serving the community and providing inspiration to others:

• Community Engagement and Service Learning, where students learn about teamwork and
compassion while improving community health and the health of underserved populations.

• The Healthy Living and Wellness Initiative, which teaches future doctors how to help
patients become better informed about taking care of themselves.

• The Medical Anatomy Center, which promotes the sharing of anatomy knowledge, and
provides continuing education in anatomy at all levels.

COMP-Northwest’s programs are a real source of pride for our entire University, and perfectly reflect
the goals of the WesternU mission statement crafted more than three decades ago: “To produce, in a
humanistic tradition, health care professionals and biomedical knowledge that will enhance and
extend the quality of life in our communities.”
