‘Match’ Celebrations

By Jeannie Davis, MPA, EdD

College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific and College
of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific-Northwest ‘match’
celebrations were held on both the Pomona, California and
Lebanon, Oregon campuses on March 16, 2018. COMP and
COMP-Northwest continue to train physicians for the future
of medicine. Out of the 309 students matched, 121 (Pomona)
and 55 (Lebanon) were matched into primary care, including
internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, and OB-GYN.
Match Day was the culmination of four years of study and
months of an intense process. Students applied to hospitals and
residency programs, selecting the field of medicine they hoped
to work in, in the city they hoped to live in. Students interviewed
with doctors and program directors. “When applying for
residencies, it’s important to apply broadly, and to keep an open
mind during interviews, learn more about different programs and
what they have to offer,” said Lauren Van Woy, DO ’18 (Pomona).
“During those few months, students will find what they’re looking
for and should follow their hearts when ranking programs. Go
with what makes you happy. Ultimately, it’s your life.”
Students created lists ranking their top choices. “The large
amount of often unnamable emotions through this application,
interview and match process have stunned me, and today’s
countdown was no different,” said Whitney Wolfe, DO ’18
(Lebanon). “Match Day is what I have been working toward for
countless years of schooling. The countdown to the match was
the longest and most terrifying process ever, the predominant
feelings of excitement, anxiously awaiting this crazy process to
be over. It’s overwhelming in that sense, hard to believe the day
has finally come and the uncertainty is unnerving.”
During the emotionally charged ceremony, students were
handed an envelope. Inside the envelope was a single sheet of
paper telling them where they wiould begin this important
stage of their lives. Dean Paula M. Crone, DO ’92, offered a toast
to students prior to the opening of their match envelopes. She
reminded students that at the end of every action is a patient
“May you embrace your destination wherever your match may
be taking you; and know that you are needed where you are
going,” she said.
