Message from the President

WesternU has grown in a number of readily visible ways over the past
few years, but much of its evolution is happening in ways and places
most people can’t see. One of these is research. Health scientists from
all nine of our colleges are collaborating in a wide variety of research
areas, from Alzheimer’s to giant panda reproduction. Their work is not
as easy to see as, say, a new building or new crop of students, but it’s a
crucial part of what we do here at WesternU, and is an area primed for
enormous growth.

I’m pleased that we were recently able to dedicate a significant space
on the fourth floor of the Health Education Center to these research
efforts, and that the dedicated area honors one of our earliest family members and longtime
supporters. The Lawrence F. Gosenfeld, DO, Research Laboratory was dedicated on Sept. 11, 2014 to
honor Dr. Gosenfeld, one of the first professors I hired in the 1980s, who left a $2.25 million gift to
WesternU. Most of the donations will be used for student scholarships, but a significant portion
went to expanding our fourth-floor HEC labs.

Larry Gosenfeld is a very important part of this university, and was responsible in large part for its
successes. Through the years there have been a lot of people like that. But he stands out, and will be
known for years to come because of the research that's coming out of the area dedicated in his
name, and because of the scientists and the teachers who will use that space to advance human
health and well-being.

I think it only fitting that the cover story of this edition of WesternU View focuses on the Gosenfeld
Lab and the work being done there. I hope you enjoy it, along with the many other facets of life at
WesternU that are covered in this edition of our magazine.

My best to you all,

Philip Pumerantz, PhD
