President’s
MESSAGE
Greetings All,
Welcome to the Summer/Fall 2019 edition of WesternU View. As you peruse its pages, you will develop a strong
understanding of the many activities in which the University is engaged as students, faculty and staff fulfill the
WesternU mission: “To produce, in a humanistic tradition, health care professionals and biomedical knowledge that
will enhance and extend the quality of life in our communities.”
No better example of fulfilling that mission can be found than the effort students, faculty, and staff make each year
toward Care Harbor, an organization that has held nine free “mega health clinics” in downtown Los Angeles over
the past several years to benefit medically underserved residents. WesternU students and faculty have been major
care providers for Care Harbor each year, and this past spring were able to help even more because the event was
next door: Care Harbor Fairplex on 27-28 April brought 1,400 patients to the home of the Los Angeles County Fair
in northwest Pomona. The colleges of Osteopathic Medicine, Dental Medicine, Optometry and Veterinary Medicine
provided care to patients – human and animal – from all over southern California, partnering with Fairplex,
Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, and the office of Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis in a grassroots
response to a critical community need.
The Care Harbor story is the centerpiece of this edition of the View, but
it is just one of many stories you will find about the people and projects
that make our University special through its enduring commitment to
improving the health of its communities.
Read on!
