To Laugh, To Love
Text and photos by Ahn Thy (Lily) Nguyen,
Podiatric Medicine student
The thing that we cling to is laughter. My brother and I love
to goof off and make each other laugh. I am grateful for
having him in my life, as he was truly a Christmas miracle.
When my mother was pregnant with him, they took an
ultrasound and diagnosed her with an ectopic pregnancy. A
surgery was performed to remove the fertilized egg, but it
was unsuccessful as they couldn’t find the egg outside of the
uterus. My mother was afraid of keeping the pregnancy due
to the surgery and went to the abortion clinic. The clinician
refused to operate because she was too far in her trimester.
Luckily, she had a C-section and gave birth to a healthy
baby boy five days before Christmas.
