“You have dutifully followed every rule and worked
tirelessly to earn good grades to receive your degree.
But today, your life changes and now you will be
writing your new story. It will be a unique story and
only one that you can write. It will be the story of
how a 2015 graduate from WesternU worked to
improve the health of the entire world.

So how will you begin this work? I’ve brought two
suggestions: Be an explorer and think off the map!

I urge you to treat your life’s journey and write your
story as an explorer, not a tourist. What’s the
difference?
• Tourists follow the routes worn smooth by those
who came before. Explorers, in the words of poet
Robert Frost, choose the roads less traveled.
q • Tourists take pictures of the people and places they
visit, and buy souvenirs. Explorers talk with people
along the way, and collect experiences.
“I know you are prepared to represent yourselves, your
professions and our university, as professionals, as • Tourists are consciously separate from the places
compassionate health care givers, and holding up the and cultures they visit. Explorers are actively

Ian Murray, DMD ’13, Alumni Association Welcome • Tourists stay safe; explorers takes risks.
I’m talking about your path through your career and
your life. Each day you will have opportunities to
explore new experiences, to engage with new people,
to challenge your own beliefs and those of your peers
and colleagues — opportunities to make a difference.
You won’t see these opportunities if you have your
nose buried in a guidebook. There’s really no
guidebook for most of what you will encounter out
there.
