Poster Day
By James D. Scott, PharmD, MEd, FCCP, FASHP
Associate Dean for Experiential and Professional Affairs, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Administration

The Advanced Elective program at WesternU is very unique, and has evolved over time. Currently, all P-4 student pharmacists
are expected to complete the 16 week experiential program. There are three tracks: Health-Systems Pharmacy, Community
Pharmacy, and Independent Ownership. Student pharmacists in the Community Pharmacy and Health-Systems tracks must
complete a research project, submit an abstract, and present a poster. The posters are presented on campus and awards given to
the top posters. The Independent Ownership track student pharmacists combine on-site work and mentoring with experienced
independent pharmacy owners with one day a week of classroom work to help them develop their own business plan for a
pharmacy. The business plans must be presented orally to experienced owners and/or loan officers, and the best plans are also
given awards.
