WesternU’s Towne & Gown Golf
Classic raises more than $30,000
Western University of Health Sciences’ Towne & Gown Golf Classic has reached a
milestone. By raising more than $30,000 at the fifth annual event this year, the
Towne & Gown Endowed Scholarship fund has topped $100,000 in total funding.
Dr. T.F. Chen, DDS, once again underwrote green fees, carts, lunch and dinner for
the 104 golfers who participated in the scramble-format tournament on Monday,
June 22, 2015 at Red Hill Country Club in Rancho Cucamonga, California.
College of Pharmacy Executive Associate Dean Sunil Prabhu, BPharm, PhD, won
the annual “Chopper Dropper” helicopter golf ball drop contest this year and its
50-50 cash prize (a helicopter team dropped 184 numbered golf balls at a
designated flag, and Dr. Prabhu's winning ball landed in the hole!). Dr. Prabhu
gave half of his winnings back to the scholarship fund. “I was very happy for the
opportunity to help support student scholarships in this way,” he said.
For the first time, the “Chopper Dropper” was streamed live via webcast, allowing
those who could not attend the tournament to watch the event in real time.
WesternU Senior Vice President Thomas Fox, PhD, said the endowment will fund
three $1,000 scholarships in 2016, and none of that would have been possible
without Dr. Chen’s generosity. “We’ve been lucky that over the last five years,
we’ve had support from Dr. Chen and the other sponsors to be able to underwrite
the tournament,” Fox said. “This has allowed us to use every dollar we’ve raised
to go to scholarships for Western University of Health Sciences students.”
Dr. Chen says he enjoys helping raise money for student scholarships. “It’s
wonderful to see so many people come out for such a good cause in raising
money to help students afford health professions school.”
Other Towne & Gown sponsors included:
• Platinum Sponsor: Wells Fargo Bank
• Silver sponsors: McKesson; HD Smith; Samaritan Health Services; Inter Valley
Health Plan; John Forbing, State Farm; William Sign Co.; IEHP; and HMC Surgical.
