In Memoriam

The WesternU campus is a bustling place, full of eager students learning the latest advances in
healthcare and life saving medicine. You often see and hear students talking about their experience
with their last OSCE or asking thorough questions of a guest speaker so they can become informed
and competent practitioners; such was the case of Dr. Mittal A. Patel. Mittal was a quiet, yet
conscientious pharmacy student. He dedicated his time to studying pharmacy and worked as a
pharmacy intern at CVS. He was busy like all students but loved the process and was excited about
becoming a pharmacist.
Mittal graduated with his PharmD in 2009, a Facebook page, dedicated to his memory, is adorned
with a family picture from the commencement ceremony, Mittal with his parents and sister. Sadly,
Mittal passed away in 2013 at the age of thirty, just four years after receiving his degree from
WesternU. To honor his life, Mittal’s family and his colleagues from CVS Store #9762 in Anaheim,
each dedicated a bench on the WesternU campus. The benches sit on the campus esplanade just in
front of the Health Professions Center and the entrance to the College of Pharmacy. The benches

include a symbol in the center of each that was designed by Mittal and combined both his love of
music and his profession as a pharmacist.

His parents, Ashvin and Jo Patel, shared that Mittal was an accomplished musician and DJ. He
played djembe drums, congo, bongo, tablas, Indian dhol, timbalis, acoustic/electronic drums,
octopad, sampler and drum machines. They also said that Mittal somehow managed, to the
amazement of many, to balance an academic, social and cultural lifestyle.
The Dr. Mittal A. Patel benches will now provide all students an often needed place of support to
Ashvin and Jo Patel with sit, reflect, socialize, and collaborate on their future as healthcare professionals.
