PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

The unspoken question posed by the 2019 Humanism Magazine theme,
“Staying Human,” is this: In the hustle and bustle of our rapidly
changing world, and amid personal and professional obligations that
keep each of us busy, do we lose touch with the core qualities that make
us human and, thus, erode humanistic behavior?
The stories, poems and photos in these pages offer an answer:
Sometimes, perhaps, but reacquainting ourselves with what makes us
human often is as simple as caring for another, experiencing a different
culture, witnessing an act of kindness, or taking time to appreciate
                                                      artistic expression.
The personal journeys taken by each author featured in this year’s
magazine offer abundant proof of how shared experience helps each of
us “stay human,” and reinforce the WesternU ethos of inclusive
scientific humanism and compassion. Enjoy and (re-)humanize!
