second permanent president in the University’s 40-year
history. The inauguration was combined with annual
Convocation ceremonies and was held in Pomona,
California, on August 12.
“I sent Dr. Wilson an email concerning the event,”
Bertone said. “It turned out he had been to the city and
knew about the race.”
Dr. Wilson said he visited Siena some years ago with his
wife and daughter.
“It is just a beautiful city,” he said. “We were there in
the off season, so we did not see the Palio.”
He was pleased to learn of Bertone’s longtime
association with Siena, calling it “a wonderful tapestry
of connections to such a unique and almost timeless
event,” and urged him to go.
“It’s remarkable that one of our veterinary faculty
members would be involved in one of the oldest athletic
events, and certainly the oldest equestrian event, in the
world,” Dr. Wilson said. “It is on the level of the
Olympics. It is a great honor for the university.”
To show his appreciation, Bertone presented Wilson
with an authentic fazzoletto, or scarf, with his contrada’s
shell symbol on a bright blue background with red and
yellow trim. The scarf is of the quality available only to
members of the contrada.
“It’s not what the tourists can get,” Bertone said.
Wilson considers it a keepsake that he can display from
time to time.
“It’s pretty cool, and I am very appreciative,” Dr. Wilson
