Joelle Ayoub, PharmD, Assistant Professor,
Pharmacy Practice and Administration
Dr. Joelle Ayoub joined the College of Pharmacy in August of 2019 as an Assistant
Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Administration. She received her PharmD from
Creighton University after achieving a Bachelor of Science in biology at the
University of California, San Diego. Following her pharmacy education, she
completed an ambulatory care-focused PGY-1 residency at the University of
Minnesota as well as a PGY-2 in ambulatory care and academia with Oregon State
University/Oregon Health and Science University. Both post graduate residency
training programs provided a focus on student education and management of chronic
disease states in the underserved patient population. Dr. Ayoub is working to
establish a practice site in an ambulatory care setting where she will provide chronic
disease state management and precept rotation students. Her research and practice
interests include COPD, proton-pump inhibitors, diabetes and interprofessional
education.
Jignesh Patel, PharmD, BSc, Assistant Professor,
Pharmacy Practice and Administration
Dr. Patel received his Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy from Wayne State
University in Detroit, Michigan. He subsequently received his Doctor of Pharmacy
from Midwestern University, Chicago College of Pharmacy. He completed a
Pharmacy Practice Residency at the Detroit Medical Center after which he practiced
as a Burn Surgical Intensive Care Unit pharmacy specialist at Detroit Receiving
Hospital. After practicing for a few years, he completed a Clinical Pharmacy
Translational Science Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship with an emphasis on
Nephrology and Critical Care at the University of Michigan. Dr. Patel joined
WesternU as Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice in September 2019 from the
University of Rochester Medical Center where he practiced as a Trauma and Burn
Surgical Intensive Care Unit pharmacy specialist. His clinical and research interests
include pharmacokinetic alterations in critical illness and the impact of medication
clearance in patients receiving renal replacement therapies.
Shawn Smith, PharmD, Assistant Professor,
Pharmacy Practice and Administration
Dr. Smith joins WesternU as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy
Practice and Administration. He completed his pre-pharmacy studies at Bloomsburg
University of Pennsylvania in 2013 and was a member of the Bloomsburg University
football team. He subsequently received his PharmD from Loma Linda University
School of Pharmacy in 2017. Dr. Smith completed an ambulatory care focused PGY-
1 at UC San Diego Health in 2018. He recently completed a PGY-2 in ambulatory
care and academia from VCU School of Pharmacy with clinical practice experience at
non-profit free clinics and research experience in diabetes, hypertension,
dyslipidemia, and smoking cessation. His practice interests include outpatient chronic
disease management with a focus on diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, smoking
cessation and cardiovascular risk reduction. Dr. Smith’s passion is to improve public
health practices by partnering with community leaders. He seeks to develop
innovative pharmacy practice models in underserved populations to enhance access
to medications and primary health care services.
