Medical Spanish Workshop
The Essential Medical Spanish for Pharmacists takes a proactive approach
to the needs of our Hispanic population by teaching student pharmacists
how to effectively communicate and educate patients in Spanish. These
skills are transferable in the workforce and have a big impact within this
region.
This student-led program has had over 700-student pharmacists enrolled.
The average student-to-facilitator ratio remains at 5:1, enabling an
enriched learning environment for students. This program is having a
positive impact on our students, as noted by Gabrielle Szczeblowski ’22,
“I appreciated the assessment for Advanced Spanish because it is practical
to know how to communicate with a Spanish-speaker when testing their
blood pressure. I also found it very useful to learn how to counsel patients
on their medications during Intermediate Spanish (ex. Take 1 tablet by
mouth twice daily).”
A big thank you to Walgreens for their support of this program and to our
two Co-Chairs Axxell Palomares ’21 and Bruno Martinez ’22. In addition, our facilitators who have made a big impact in
educating their colleagues: Alberto Guzman ’22, Aura Gutierrez ’22, Leslie Banuelos ’23, Jasmine Garcia ’21, Siria Medina ’23,
Kimberly Garay ’23, Gennesi Mendez ’23, Patricia Picazo ’21, Priscilla Cuan ’22, Jose Zamora ’23, Susana Morales ’22, Victoria
Carpio Mera ’22 and Yvonne Alva ’21.
The Essential Medical Spanish Program for Pharmacists would not function without our amazing facilitators. Thank you to all our
past and current Medical Spanish facilitators who have been dedicated inside and outside their classroom.
A big thank you to Walgreens, our fall 2019 sponsor. The funds provided helped with program textbooks and to offset the cost of
student lunches provided for each session.
Chaffey High School Career Day
WesternU College of Pharmacy visited Chaffey High School
for their annual career day. High school students are given
the opportunity to meet and mingle with many professionals
in different sectors. Some include law enforcement/public
safety, military, health care providers, non-profit companies,
etc. A big thank you to our student pharmacists, Susana
Morales ’22, Victoria Carpio Mera ’22, and Nathania
Barrios ’22, who educated and networked with the next
generation.
During lunchtime, the students visited different vendors to
learn about each sector and the importance of their work in
the community. Our student pharmacists shared their
journey, life of a graduate student, and things they can do
now for their future resume.
Victoria Carpio Mera ’22, Susana Morales ’22 and Nathania Barrios ’22 answer
questions from well-prepared students.
