MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN
College of
Allied Health Professions
On June 7, 2014, the Health Science Department of the
College held its annual Barfield Community Day at Joseph C.
Barfield Elementary School in Pomona. Gathering to celebrate
with, and learn from, one another, WesternU students and
faculty, the Barfield Parent Group, and community members
conducted health screenings, provided health information,
and engaged in fun activities that promoted active living. The
Barfield Parent Group shared its work and enlisted volunteers
for the coming school year. The group will join with parents
from Madison Elementary to support community gardens at
the two schools.
The city of Pomona was on hand to teach residents to be
prepared for natural and other disasters. House of Ruth and
Tri-City Mental Health provided information for family
support in violence prevention, communication and life
skills. The Oral Health Center, based at WesternU, provided
Stephanie D. Bowlin, PA, EdD toothbrushes and information about free and reduced cost
dental care. Rita Nazarian, RDH, provided oral health
education and disease prevention demonstrations and
information. Health Science students conducted edugames
aimed at smoking prevention, healthy eating, and skills for
achieving active living.
The Department of Health Sciences at WesternU and the
Barfield Parent Group have banded together to address
determinants of health and to create a culture of health
within the neighborhood. Utilizing Community-Based
Participatory Research, they are on a quest to build
sustainable change that will result in improved student
academic performance and higher levels of health within the
community. Aligning with the Healthy Cities initiative for
community gardens, safe routes to school and biking routes,
plans are in motion to transform the neighborhood into a
place of wellness that fosters each member’s contribution for
the wellbeing of all.
