MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

College of

Veterinary Medicine

We are proud of our accomplishments, and strive to
consistently improve. Change is inevitable. This is true
for everyone and everything, including institutions of
higher learning.

Our College has just completed the first year of its
present five-year strategic plan, which is designed to
guide the evolution of our program. Within six months
of implementing our plan, we were faced with
unexpected developments. The most notable are the
assumption of the autonomous management of
WesternU’s on-campus veterinary hospital; the
unification of our wellness programs; and assumption of
operational control of a shelter hospital in the north-
central LA area as part of a collaborative effort between
Los Angeles Animal Services and Found Animal
Phillip Nelson, DVM, PhD Foundation. Changes like these can be viewed from a
number of perspectives -- most of them involving
fretting, hand-wringing, fear, despair, and a tendency to
simply succumb to the inevitable.

Our faculty and staff continue to provide superlative
leadership and support for our college programs. We have
chosen to embrace these changing circumstances as
opportunities for improvement rather than the typical
foreboding demonstrated by some. I am pleased to
acknowledge the unparalleled commitment of both
groups to the establishment of a nourishing academic
environment. We see tremendous potential in these
opportunities, and will endeavor to leverage these
opportunities into advantages for our students, our
community, and every constituent of the College we can
identify.

This is going to be another glorious year. I hope you
enjoy this edition of WesternU View.
