MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

College of Optometry

As I sit down to write this message, all of the signs of fall are
around us. We have completed a Halloween candy drive in
support of the Pomona Boys and Girls Club, we are
wrapping up our season of fall school screenings with the
Pomona Unified School District, and we are starting the
admissions cycle for next year’s entering class. It is the
natural order of things that the seasons are changing!

Just as the leaves on the trees go from small buds in the
spring, to fully formed green leaves in the summer, to
colorful leaves falling in the autumn, we have a natural cycle
in the College. It is the natural order of things that our
applicants enroll as students, our students become
graduates, and our graduates become our WesternU alumni.
Our two graduating classes have been in the forefront of my
mind this week. One alumnus came by to share news about
his practice and to let us know how he is doing. Another
came by with a new fiancée and wedding invitations to

Elizabeth Hoppe, OD, MPH, DrPH share. This morning I received a joyful update with precious
pictures of an alumna’s infant daughter. What a blessing to
see our alumni prospering and thriving in their chosen
paths!

It is my pleasure to reflect back on the times when they were
applicants and to recall their days as students. The cycle
continues, and all of the members of our College Team and
WesternU extended family are here to ensure that the cycle
runs smoothly.
