MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

College of

Graduate Nursing

Preparing the 21st Century Nurse – Advancing
Ambulatory Care & Interprofessional Education
The College of Graduate Nursing has increased efforts to
prepare our Master’s Entry nursing students to work in
community-based settings. Eight students completed their
community health rotation at a transitional housing
complex. Learning activities were designed in collaboration
with community members to meet the population-based
needs of these families. In addition to nursing students,
dental medicine and optometry students participated in
screenings. Comparative research will study student
outcomes of the two groups -- traditional vs. non-
traditional. The project is continuing this fall. Two MSN-E
students are receiving stipend support to serve as leaders to
assist faculty and the community members, to assure
continuity.
Karen Hanford, EdD, MSN, FNP
Dr. Quannetta Edwards, Ivy Tuason and Ruth Trudgeon
were invited presenters at the International Sigma Theta
Tau honor society conference in Hong Kong, China. They
provided three podium presentations on global health.
Presentations included the integration of global health and
population-based curriculum in master’s and doctoral
studies, and osteopathic medicine. Interprofessional
teaching was the main focus of these presentations.

CGN’s Outreach to Underserved Communities
The Family Nurse Practitioner Program received grant
funding to support a part-time outreach coordinator to
secure additional training sites in California’s designated
health care shortage areas. To date, CGN has secured 17
new clinical sites in the Central Valley. Nurse Practitioner
students receive stipend support to travel and complete
clinical training at these sites. In addition, recruiting efforts
are underway to recruit more students from these areas to
meet the health care needs of these communities.
