MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN
College of Pharmacy
For the past several years, pharmacists and pharmacy
educators have been bemoaning the fact that new
pharmacy schools are opening at an alarming rate. When
the WesternU College of Pharmacy enrolled its charter
class in 1996, we were the fourth pharmacy school in
California and the first new California school in nearly
40 years. Fast forward to 2014. There are now 11 schools
in California, with the largest expansion taking place in
Southern California. Since there is no agency that
regulates the number of schools as long as accreditation
standards are met, sustainability of these programs will
depend on market factors such as job availability, size
and quality of the applicant pool, employment
satisfaction, and wages.
This has been a time of serious reflection. With so many
choices for pharmacy applicants, how can we ensure that
WesternU College of Pharmacy remains a “College of
Choice?” Fortunately, we have positioned ourselves well,
Daniel Robinson, PharmD with an outstanding faculty, a passion for high-quality
education, highly visible cutting-edge research programs,
state-of-the art classroom designs, and consistently high
performance on licensing exams by our graduates.
Perhaps our greatest advantage is being part of Western
University of Health Sciences, one of the most
comprehensive health professions universities in the
nation. Being a purely graduate-level institution, we are
defining the future of health care delivery. As our
students in nine colleges work together in problem-based
learning, we are building the health care teams of the
future with the knowledge, skills, and professionalism
that will promote safe, high-quality collaborative patient-
centered care.
I believe the choice for pharmacy applicants is clear --
